For me this week it's Grow!

Our poor vegie patch has been quite neglected of late even though we are still picking feeds of potatoes, carrots and the odd tomato. You can't compare the taste or freshness and creating a thriving vegie patch is high on the list of my priorities for 2012.

So first with the clean up.

This is what is looked like before (luckily it's behind a fence at the rear of our property so no-one can see it!).

This is definitely a work in progress but already only after a couple of wheelbarrows few of leaves and weeds it's starting to look much better. I'll keep you updated on how it progresses throughout the year.

Quilting project is now done & dusted!

You may have been following along with my posts before Christmas on how I had decided to make a Miss 13 a quilt for her bed. Having no previous quilting experience I chose to wing it and create as I went along. It was wrapped and under the Christmas tree in the dying hours but it was well worth all the effort.

It is very light weight, which is perfect for our hot Australian summers.

I made my own binding and used a large quilt backing so I didn't need to join it.

I have caught the bug and have so many other projects now in mind.

Here's what I've made this week:

During my Summer break I thrifted this fabric from the Meeniyan Op Shop ($3 for 3 metres) and made myself the Pinafore dress from the Make It Perfect pattern book.

It's a little had trying to take photo's of yourself wearing a dress but I think you get the general idea. I do love the result - the only change I made to the pattern was to take 12cm off the hemline to make it sit on my knee - wish I'd only taken 8cm as it is a little short when sitting down.

I make a list of all the things that I would like to achieve throughout the year and hopefully by the end I've made some head way to reaching these goals.

Although I haven't been in the Haby Goddess office very much these last few weeks, I have been busy doing lots of planning for the year ahead. It's going to be a very busy but exciting year!

While my normal blog posts won't start again for a couple of weeks, I will be dropping in from time to time to share what I'm up to.

We have just spent the last two weeks on the Victorian South Gippsland Coast making the most of the few days of hot weather we've had. Here are a couple of snaps off my camera.

Walkerville North isn't great for swimming but keeps us entertained on long walks amongst the rocks.

I can't quite believe it's Christmas Eve!

Well it is, so I wanted to say a huge Merry Christmas to you and your family.

To Stitch in the Ditch

I'd been putting off adding the backing fabric to the quilt I'm making Miss 13 as I thought that it was going to be a lot more difficult than it actually was.

I quilted the wading to each individual square as I wanted the quilted squares to alternate vertical & horizontal stitching. This meant I needed to stitch in the ditch to add the backing fabric and hold it in place.

I used a nice weight quilting fabric for the backing which was very wide, as the quilt is to fit a double bed.
The best tip I can give for adding the backing to a quilt is that you can't over pin it! Add more pins than you think you need to secure the two pieces (or three normally - two fabric & one wading).

To stitch in the ditch simply means to sew in between the two pieces of joined fabric on the existing seam.
As you sew, gently open up the seam with your hands so you can get as close as you can to the original stitching.
I turned my machine pedal to slow for this and used my walking foot.

Now I'm off to make my binding and finally finish this quilt - I have less than 48 hours to get it finished & wrapped under the Christmas tree!

Using a 1/4 Inch Seam Foot Attachment

Another machine foot attachment I inherited from my mother-in-law Barb is the 1/4 seam foot. Many quilters or patchworkers will have one of these attachments in their sewing drawers as most patterns call for a 1/4 seam. This attachment is for a basic Janome model.

As I work towards finishing my daughters quilt, this attachment with a 1/4 inch metal edge guide has made piecing the quilt together a breeze.

Your fabric pieces rest up against the metal plate giving you a perfect 1/4 inch seam every time. Making it easy to match up corners and seams

It also reduced seam bulk on the reverse side of your work.

This sewing machine attachment would also come in handy when you can't see the markings on your sewing machines metal needle plate.

Using your Walking Foot Guide Arm

Every time I've purchased a walking foot, and yes I've purchased a few, the first thing I do is throw the guide arm into one of my sewing boxes to gather dust.

A little while ago I shared with you how I was making a quilt for my daughter. I'm quilting each square as I go and could of really done with one of those guide arms that I had carelessly discarded.

Well, while I was searching through my things for something else I found one. I was soooo excited. As a result I have been motoring through the squares and they are almost ready to piece together.

In case you haven't used an arm before, here's what you do.

The guide arm is a separate metal attachment. This is a walking foot for a Jamone so other machine attachments may vary.

Firmly push arm into place and slide out to the measurement you require.

The guide arm should rest on the stitching line, fabric edge or seam that you are wanting to use as your guide. Then sew, the guide will glide over your fabric.

Say goodbye to wonky lines.

How to use Snap Fasteners

I tell the story in Sew School how I smashed a very large glass plate covering my grandmother's antique dining room table when hammering a snap fastener. I felt a mixture of embarrassment, stupidity & devastation.

There are loads of different options for snap fasteners.

They can be metal, plastic or glass tops.

They can be applied with a simple hand tool & hammer, a gripper or even as tape.

Don't be as silly as me, here are a few safe options and tips for adding them to your projects:

There are four parts to each snap fastener set. Two with prongs and two that fasten together (or the sockets).

This method is using a simple tool that will come with most snap fastener sets.

You will need a hammer or something heavy that you can press the pieces together but you MUST ensure you are doing this on a safe, secure surface (unlike what I did!).

As with any fastener, make sure you mark the spot of both sides with either chalk or erasable pen

Poke your 1st prong piece through your fabric - I'm using a thin crochet hook to help.
Place you 1st fastener piece or socket on top of the prongs.
Take your tool and cover the socket piece and either lightly hammer or apply force to engage the two pieces. If the fastener is glass, don't hammer too hard as it will crack.
The tool will need to match the size fastener you are using.
Repeat this process for the 2nd side to the fastener.

There are also tools called grippers which help make this task very easy and eliminates the need for hammering.

Add the prong piece to the top of the gripper tool and the socket to the other side.
The socket piece will be facing downward as the prongs need to engage with this piece.
Place the gripper on your marking. This will be the opposite side of your fabric to the example with the tool.
Press hard until both pieces are secure.

Using a snap fastener tape is a great alternative. It is already done for you so it's quick, perfectly spaced, on a 20mm wide white twill and they are secure. Available in The Haby Goddess online store by the metre.

Kris Kringle Wrap Up

A big, big thank you to everyone who participated in this years Handmade Kris Kringle. All gifts should now be well and truly on there way.

It's been a huge success and I've loved receiving all your emails and comments about the wonderful gifts you made and received. It seems everyone involved had lots of fun.

Even though I would call myself fairly tech savvy, I decided that the best way to organise the gift partners was with a good old fashioned hard copy! So here it is - it does get anymore basic than that.

My husband has even jumped on board offering to devise an easier system for matching names next year.

I wanted to close this years Kris Kringle with some more images and blog links showing how much work went into the gifts.

Make: fabric covered gift tags

I had bookmarked a tutorial by the girls at A Spoonful of Sugar to make gift tags from last years Christmas Cards but I can't find where I put the cards!

So using that as inspiration, I made fabric covered ones.

You will need:

Spray Adhesive
Tags
Fabric - Press well and add a light iron on interfacing to the area you will cut your tags from.

Lay your tags on paper and spray on adhesive
Lay them onto the fabric (wrong side), pushing all corner to ensure they stick well
When dry, cut around the tags
Add a light spray to the corner of each tag and sprinkle some Christmas glitter
Hole punch through the original tag hole to pierce the fabric
Add string, ribbon or whatever you fancy to tie the tag to your gift

Today's Sewing: shirred pillowcase dress

Doing some sewing for Miss 9 today as she is in desperate need for new summer nighties & pj's.

I don't really have many sewing patterns for her size so I thought I would just make a quick and easy pillowcase dress with my own twist!

There are loads of tutorials on the net for drafting a pattern for this style. I like this one by Susan Petersen from Freshly Picked. It shows you how to measure your child to make the correct sized armholes.

This is a great base design where it's easy to add your own preferred finishes. I decided that instead of threading through a tie, I would add shirring back & front to make it more comfortable while sleeping. It is more likely to also hold in place and not move around.

The armholes have a wide bias strip added - double fold bias made from 3 inch strips.

I have chosen to add them like a band instead of an edge to give her plenty of room for movement on hot nights.

The thickness of the bias also makes for comfortable bows on the shoulder instead of thin strappy ones

The bias band housed the shirred ends giving it a beautiful finish.

To give more length I added a wide gathered band to the bottom

Meet Dabbles

I met Nellie from Dabbles at a recent Melbourne Expo and knew I wanted to stock her fun products straight away. Young and fresh designs covering stitching, knitting, paper craft & beading.

This box is a sample from the 3 in 1 Gift Box Pattern & Template.

I used standard card stock that I covered in fabric using a spray on adhesive. I photocopied the templates and then cut them out instead of tracing.

It even got a "OMG that's so cute" from Miss 13!

The easy peasy tissue flower will be made time & time again I'm sure.

All projects come as a printed 4 page booklet on glossy card with great instructions, templates if required, techniques & patterns.

DIY: Doily Food Covers

Summer is only days away in Australia which means many of our meals and entertaining will be done outdoors.
It is almost essential to have some sort of food covers to keep flies, mozzies & other bugs off our summer tucker.

I have grabbed some doilies from my stash, added a few glass beads with a needle and thread and within minutes have whipped up a cute food cover. It is best to use glass beads as they will give more weight than plastic or wooden.

Kris Kringle - Show 'n Tell

How to use a Seam Allowance Guide

If you've ever had to add a seam allowance to a pattern you will know how time consuming it can be.
Japanese pattern books, Burda patterns or drafting your own are the main offenders.

This awesome little gadget will drastically reduce your cutting out time.

Designed by Melbourne based Hollie, the 'Seam Allowance Guide' is a strong magnet that sits on your scissor blade while you cut your fabric.

There are two different magnets. The yellow is slightly sloped for scissors that have an angled blade (like mine) and the green magnet is for straight blade. The pack includes both.

Measure and mark a starting point with a piece of tailors chalk where your seam allowance should be. This will be the only marking you will need to do.

Place your scissors at your chalked mark.
Roll the little black ring until it sits on the edge of your fabric. Cut!

It is such a simple gadget that really does work.

Understitching prevents the lining or interfacing of your garment from rolling and being exposed if you are not using a topstitch. It is particularly noticable if your lining fabric is a contrasting fabric.

It's easy to do and will only take a minute.

Great for around necklines & sleeves.

Sew your lining/interfacing to your main garment piece as per your specified seam allowance
If sewing a curve, clip & grade as your normally would and press to ensure it is sitting flat
Open up you pieces and press your seam allowance upward towards the lining/interfacing. Turn over so you have the right sides of fabric facing you. Sew your understitching in the seam allowance up to 2mm beside your original stitching row. This attaches the seam allowance to the lining/interfacing
When you turn your fabric over, it should look like the last image.

YOU SHOULD NOT SEE ANY STITCHING FROM THE FRONT OF YOUR GARMENT

Tutorial: Shirred Tissue Paper Christmas Crackers

What would Christmas lunch be without the paper hats, corny jokes & plastic nail clippers from our Christmas Crackers, or Bon Bons as we call them here in Australia?

Here is a quick, easy tutorial to make your own which are perfect for personalising for your guests.

You don't normally associate shirring with tissue paper, but hey there's no rules right?

To be honest, I wasn't sure it would even work until I tried it!

But it did and I'm really pleased with the result.

What you will need:

Cardboard rolls for your inserts. I purchased mine in a pack of six from the craft shop ($5)
Snap strips (the thing that goes bang!). Again you can purchase these in packs.
Tissue paper
Double sided tape
Shirring elastic & thread
A paper party hat, corny joke (see below for link) and a trinket - all completely optional of course!

The size of the paper will depend on your Snap strip size. Measure approx 2cm extra both ends to get your length.
Be generous with the width as the shirring will shrink it.
My measurements were 32cm long by 25 cm wide. Tissue paper is double ply - any thicker and it won't shirr as much
Load your machine as you would normally for shirring - some links are below
Measure & mark 6cm from the top and bottom of your paper length and mark the middle.
Sew across the width of your paper starting at the 6cm mark - 3 rows. You do not need to back sew or tie off. Do not stretch out the paper in the 2nd & 3rd row while stitching
Turn paper around and do another 3 at the bottom again starting at the 6cm mark
Sew one row across the middle at your mark
Trim back all threads

Add all your bits and pieces into the cardboard roll
Apply a piece of double sided tape to the length of the cardboard roll and gently press close
Add another piece of tape at both ends but a little further in so it overlaps
Add the snap strip and with your fingers just scrunch closed the two shirred ends

Adding belt loops is easy - I'll show you how!

Adding belt loops to your sewing is a lot easier than you think.

Not only are they functional, they can be an easy decorative feature too.

Below I'll show you how to easily add belt loops into your seams during construction of the garment.

But I also wanted to make mention some other easy options.

Side thread loop: This is probably the simplest of all and is added to garment after sewing is finished or can be added to a purchased garment that needs altering. You hardly notice they are there.

This tutorial from Whimsy Couture Sewing Blog shows you how to add threaded belt loops.

Denim jeans belt loops: These loops almost always extend past the waistband. This is because the belts worn in today's fashion are wider than the width of the waistband. They're made in a similar way to below but can be added onto the garment with the loop ended being folded over and sewn. Not always included in the seam. A row of top stitch is sometimes the stitching that connects the loop to the garment.

To add a belt loop that is included in the seams at time of construction is EASY.

Make your belt loops as you would double folded bias.

Sew a top stitch down both sides

Measure and pin your strips onto the panel or waistband where you want them.

Sew together your fabric pieces as per normal.

Trim loops to fit within seam allowance and finish off your seams and press.

Tutorial: Handmade Christmas Wreaths in Neutral Tones

Here in Australia, we celebrate Christmas in summer, so in many parts that means it's pretty damn hot!

A great alternative to the traditional green & red is a handmade Christmas wreath in natural fabrics such as linen & cotton in cool neutral colours. These are much more fitting for an Australian summer.

What you will need:

Foam Wreath Rings (I've used 3 different sizes)
Spray adhesive is easiest. You many also need a little craft glue for touching up.
Natural fabrics - linen, cotton, silk plus lace & buttons
Dressmaking pins
General sewing accessories

Cut your fabrics into strips. They don't need to be uniform.
Spray your foam wreath with adhesive.
Wrap your fabric pieces around the foam making sure all the ends finish to the back.
Repeat this process for however many rings you plan on using.

Using the dressmaking pins, join your rings together. They are super light so pins will easily do the job. If you are not convinced, add a little craft glue also.
When all three rings are together make your flowers. See below for a downloadable tutorial on how to make these scrappy flowers.
Again using pins, secure flowers to foam through the buttonholes.
If you wish to hang your wreath, take a length of ribbon of twill and again using pins, secure it to the top of the main wreath.

Book Review: Crochet with Zpagetti by Geesje Mosies

A while ago I did a blog post on Hoooked Zpagetti, a sustainable yarn made from left over fashion textiles.

I am such a fan of this product.
As a crochet novice it is so easy to use and you can achieve a finished product in such as short space of time. Flowers can be whipped up in a matter of minutes!

I was very excited to meet the team at the recent Melbourne Sewing & Craft Show and even more excited when I was given a copy of the latest book "Crochet with Zpagetti" by Geesje Mosies.

The book covers a great selection of projects for knitting and crochet with the simplest of stitches used.

Turn your favourite magazines into placemats

Instead of having your magazines sit in a pile gathering dust, use your favourite pages and create these quick & easy PVC covered placemats.

Frankie magazines are well read in our house as Mr HG & Miss 13 also love them. Now these amazing images and stories can be part of our meal times too. But you can use whatever magazines you read.

You'll need:
Magazines
Clear PVC - 8g (available from fabric retailers/Clark Rubber/think even Bunnings may sell it)
A sewing machine

Carefully pull out your favourite pages.

Straight up the edges (I used a papercutter)

The placemat will be two pages wide. Slightly overlap your pages and stick together with either a smidgen of glue or double sided tape. This is really just so they don't come apart before sewing.

Cut two pieces per mat of the PVC. Make them larger than the pages so you have quite a good margin to place a couple of pins. This process is similar to the Storybook Bunting I did for a subscribers newsletter a few months back.

Sew around the edge of all four sides with a straight stitch. See my related posts below for tips on sewing with PVC.

Cut excess PVC from the edge and you are done!

These can be simply wiped down after use. Probably not suitable for young ones that may spills drinks etc as liquid could seep between the stitching. Do not soak.

Adding your own twist to craft projects

On Friday at the Melbourne Sewing and Craft Show I met Nellie from Dabbles.com.au.

Dabbles is a new crafty business selling cute patterns in embroidery, knitting, sewing and more.

We were speaking about why she doesn't offer kits with her patterns and Nellie mentioned something that really resonated with me.

"But putting the items together for a crafty project is half the fun".

Sometimes I think we get a little too hung up on having the right materials before starting a project therefore the project may never get started or we tend to opt for kits.

You don't always need to have the exact materials mentioned in the project list.

It's OK to add your own twist.

For signing up to the Dabbles mailing list I received this adorable cross stitch pattern. I didn't have quite the right size aida cloth or the correct colour threads but I still wanted to get started on the project while I was away over the weekend so I just used the items that I already had.

If I had waited until I had a chance to buy the correct items then it may never have been started!

Designers love seeing how their patterns & materials are interpreted by others - as long it for personal use of course!

So next time you don't have the exact materials mentioned, don't let your creative moment pass, IMPROVISE.

Went for a coffee & ended up in a Vlog!

While I was out and about yesterday I called in for a quick catch up & coffee with my good friend & creative buddy Cinti from My Poppet. Cute Trick or Treat Parcels to make

Halloween isn't celebrated in Australia like the US and in the 15 years I've lived in my house I've not had a trick or treater until 2 years ago - about 4 lots of them! I was extremely embarrassed when I had absolutely nothing to give them - not even BBQ Shapes.

So last year the girls and I got busy and made some cute little packs up.
Guess what? Not one trick or treater came. The girls had lolly bags in their lunch boxes for weeks after.

Regardless, I will not be left with a small child standing at my door with the look of disappointment ever again!
Here are the instructions to make these cute little treat parcels out of poster paper with a sewn edge.

You will need:

Paper - poster paper thickness - cut into 21cm x 21cm squares
Treats
Ribbon
General sewing supplies - use a contrasting thread

Take a single square and fold in half but only crease the ends like the above image.
Then fold the other way so all four sides have a small crease.
Follow each crease and place (not a line) a mark at 5cm. I am using pencil for this example so you can see it but I would recommend just scoring the paper with something pointy like an unpicker. You don't want any markings visible.

Once you have your four markings, join them to make a square. This will form your base.
As shown in diagram in the top right hand image. Draw two lines from the square to the corner point to form a triangle.
Repeat for all three other corners and your pattern should look like this.
With your finger, fold a crease along each four side lines of the base.

Fold your paper in half without forming a crease.
Sew along the two outer lines shown above

Push the ends to meet in the centre and it will start to form the correct shape.
Matching the two lines you have scored, sew your third side seam. It will be tricky. I haven't shown it here but using a zipper foot attachment will help a lot. You will not to able to sew without folding the paper so make sure it's the base that gets most of the folding as the weight of the treats will straighten it out.
Add your treats through the one side that is left open.
Again matching the lines you have marked, sew the final side closed.
Cut your threads
Cut off the excess paper with a pair of pinking shears
Hide the top with a ribbon bow.

How to: Mend & hem with hand stitching

Ok, confession time!
This is my daughters school dress which had the hem pulled down at the end of Term 1. It has sat in the bottom of the ironing basket for the whole two winter terms waiting to be fixed. When the hem pulled on the 1st dress, I used hemming tape but hand stitching really does give it a much nicer finish.

Now that we are 2 weeks into Term 4, the winter kilt has been packed away and I can longer keep washing her only other dress each night. This job can no longer be put off.

Press your hem to it's original fold.
Take a very long piece of thread, double over and tie a secure knot in the end.Match thread to your fabric as close as you can.
Start at a side seam. Only hem half the way around with the same thread. If the hem happens to break again, then you only need to hem that section again and not the whole lot.
Try to use the stitching holes from the original hem. It will keep your stitching straight and evenly spaced.
Place your needle through the folded hem and take just the smallest amount possible of the front fabric - that's why it's great to use existing stitching holes.
Pull your thread through and continue - the original thread holes were quite close together, you don't need to stitch that often, about 1.5 - 2cm apart.
As the last image shows, the thread is barely visible from the front.
Press, then go to the pantry and give yourself a big piece of chocolate for finally getting that hand sewing done!

This is what will happen if you pull too tightly on your thread as you sew - it will gather. Be careful of this and keep checking as you sew.

How to make 'Shrinky Dink' Embellishments

Do you remember making 'shrinky dinks' as a kid?

That's where you take a plastic snack wrapper, place it in the oven and it shrinks to little pieces.

I remember using a Twisties packet and adding it to my keyring (I thought I was one very cool kid!).

Here I've used the same concept but made them into cute little embellishments for a headband.

1. Cover an oven tray with foil and pre-heat your oven. I set mine medium as I wanted some control over how they shrunk plus I kept the door open . Empty all the contents from your snack packs and place on tray.
2. Use a baking tin to help keep them flat as they will curl. When they have shrunk to the size you want, dip them in cold water and this will hardened them instantly.
3. Find something round to fit the shrunk packet and use pinking shears to cut. A straight cut doesn't really work because they are 3 dimensional and they never look round.
4. These are more for embellishments that won't get a huge amount of wear and tear. I added a button and then stitched them to a fabric covered headband for my daughter. The stitching can tear the plastic so back it up with some glue.

This Kris Kringle will work a little differently than a swap. The item you receive will not be from the person you made for and you won't know who that person is until you're ready to send it. We are really mixing up the love.

This year's theme is CHRISTMAS - RED & WHITE

You could make an ornament for the tree, something for the table, gift tags or cards that the receiver can then use, a tea towel, an apron, a brooch - anything.
Here's how it will work:

Fresh Herb Origami Wrappers

I'm catching up with some girlfriends for a walk later and wanted to give them fresh herbs from my garden plus eggs from my new chickens.

I loved this Chopstick Wrappers tutorial from A Spoonful of Sugar and thought I could instead wrap the herbs using newspaper & string.

You will need some newspaper squares - 6" x 6" and some string
Check out Lisa & Sarah's great tutorial on how to fold the wrappers.
Group your herbs and tie with string around the middle to secure.
Place herbs in wrapper and again tie with string.
Snip the ends off to neaten.

You may or may not of seen my posts over the weekend on facebook about my new chicken pen. We had an old swing set (now about 11 years old!) that was ready for the hard rubbish. My husband had a vision to create a chicken pen with the frame. I wasn't convinced of his concept but now it is made I love it! He was done a great job. The chickens have settled in well and we are already receiving 3 eggs each day.

A to Z in haberdashery - B is for buttons

I love buttons, if I find myself at a garage sale, op shop or trash market, buttons are the one thing I always look for. My family have been known to leave me and come back!

Buttons can be made from almost anything and come in any shape or size.

There are two different types of buttons : sew through & shank.
Sew through buttons are flat with usually 2 or 4 holes to thread your thread through.
Shank have either a loop or a hollow section on the back of the button to sew the button on with. The front of the button is flat. If the button has a loop, it is normally designed to give a bit of space between the layers of fabric.

Want to have a go at making your own?

Add fabric to these kits (they come in all different sizes) in either metal loop shank or flat backed for craft.
Use these button moulds from the Mold Muse to create your own.

A couple of quick tips for sewing on buttons:

Match your thread to the button and not your fabric
When using sew through buttons with 2 holes, match the holes the same way as the buttonhole. For example if your buttonhole is vertical - holes should be vertical.
Take note of how the shank should be lined up. Especially important if the button is a shape or have a printed pattern. If sewing more than one button, all shanks should be facing the same way.

Big Guy vs Little Guy

An email this morning from April at Blacksburg Belle got me thinking about something that is happening in my town.

Our local independent supermarket is about to be challenged by a new supermarket owned by a large national chain. Now normally, I would be shouting from the roof tops to support the little guy instead of the big guy but in this case I just can't do that.

Each week I drive 25 minutes down the hill to do my groceries instead of the 6 minutes I could drive to do it at the independent.

Why?

The independent just doesn't provide and service that the big guy does. I don't feel like they value me as a customer so I have moved on.

I think this lesson can be learnt by all small businesses, including me here at The Haby Goddess. We have a lot to prove in the craft/handmade industry as we are competing with established retail chains that mass produce items, more often than not at a cheaper price.

1. We will over time, all make mistakes, either with a wrong or faulty order. Be quick to fix it. Apologise. Act like you care. Be honest. Most customers will be forgiving to a business where they feel they have done what they can to solve a problem or dispute.

2. Friendliness is key. Be approachable and make sure your customers can contact you easily.

3. Provide a quality product or service far superior to what's available from the big guys.

4. Offer a customer service standard not offered by the large companies in your industry. I like article by Alli at Motivating Mum about being served at a Service Station! Some of us will even remember them cleaning our windscreen.

5. KEEP YOUR PROMISES

It is likely that the independent will struggle against the big guy and I really wish this wasn't the case, it goes against everything I wish for.

How to add a sleeve placket (the cheats way)

Many novice sewers quiver at the thought of having to add a sleeve placket. So here's a quick cheats version. One of my favourite jackets has this finish and it looks great.

Fold your sleeve fabric piece in half. Measure and pin how deep you want your placket.

Cut along the fold to your pin.
Cut a strip of fabric either in the same of contrasting fabric.

You don't want it too thick (2.5 - 3cm).

Press fabric strip as if it were double folded bias.

Pin your fabric strip onto the cut sleeve slit.
The tricky part here is making sure the fabric strip catches the highest point of the cut slit.
Take it slow here. I find it easier to take my foot off the pedal and hand wind the balance wheel to ensure it catches.

Because my contrasting fabric edge strip is quite thin I didn't need to do this next step but if you find the top point is bulging a little. Turn your sleeve to the wrong side a sew diagonally at the top of the trim creating a v.

Trim the bottom of the fabric trim strip and add your cuff and closure.

Tutorial: Elastic waistband with flat front

There are many ways to do a waistband and a particular favourite of mine is the elastic back with a flat front.

I find Miss 13 likes this style and wears it in many of her skirts & skirt style shorts.

It can also help with not having to add any closures to some of your garments.

1. Take your back piece, fold a 5mm hem and then fold waistband over as per pattern or at least the width of your elastic.
2. Thread through your elastic
3. Secure the ends of the elastic with some baste stitching
4. Sew your back piece to the front - matching the fabric from the bottom hem. You will be left with a front flap at the top as shown.
5. Trim your elastic back, remove basting stitching. Press your seams towards the front and press over the side seam of the front waistband flap
6. Again press a 5mm hem along the front waistband edge and fold over to match the back waistband stitching. Sew your final row of stitching along the front waistband.

NOTE: If you are adding this style of waist to an existing pattern, as with all altering of patterns, you need to consider how the changes will effect the finished garment. Do you need to reduce the front panel sides if the pattern original pattern allowed for an all elastic waist? Is the back gathered enough that the garment can be taken on and off easily without a zip?

In my example, this is an A-Line skirt which I have added the required allowance to both front & back sides.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer is something you would not normally associate with celebration but in our family we celebrated my sister-in-laws 10 years of good health in May after being diagnosed when she was in her late 30's. Having two daughters of my own and reading the statistic that 1 in 9 women by the age of 85 will be diagnosed, I hope the continued research from funds raised will eliminate or at least reduce their risk of ever being diagnosed to an absolute minimum.

The 67 million dollars raised by the National Breast Cancer Foundation since 1994 has helped thousands of women, all ages, to also celebrate their return to good health.

The crafting community is always quick to get behind causes, so here are just a few haby items where some of their proceeds go towards Breast Cancer related foundations.

Product Preview: Clover Flower Frill Template

You all know how much I love haby gadgets and this Clover Flower Frill Template has not disappointed me!

I've made something similar before here on a headband but I used glue and it was very messy and slow going.

As with most Clover products, you can make the exact same thing without the gadget but it does make it a lot easier with it.

The pack includes two different sized finished flowers - 75mm & 100mm.

There are two reusable templates of each.

Cut and press some rough squares a little larger than the template you are using.

Fold as per instructions. After the first couple the template automatically folds into the correct formation.

You will need 15-25 petals for each flower. How many will depend on the thickness of your fabric. I've alternated with 3 different fabrics - linen, silk & cotton.

Pattern Book Review: Stylish Dress Book by Yoshiko Tsukiori

Today I made my first dress from the Stylish Dress Book:Wear with Freedom by Yoshiko Tsukiori which is now available in The Haby Goddess online store.

The design is 'Y'. A loose fitting dress with a placket style front panel. This is definitely not a beginners pattern book. You need to trace all pattern pieces & add your seam allowance when cutting. This can be a little over whelming in itself.

The pattern did go together really well though. The most difficult part was the neck line.

Sizing: The book states that sizes have been adapted to western 6-16. Upon measuring myself I found that I was actually outside a size 16!!! I would normally be a 14 top & 12-14 pant. After drowning my sorrows with another Tim Tam, I decided to make up the 16 anyway and it was way too big. I will need to take it in otherwise I will be able to moonlight as a hot air balloon!

I do love the dress style and will make it again. A soft drapey fabric or jersey would work great. The Dress Y pattern did seem to be missing a piece (sleeve) from the pattern sheets but there was a very simple solution so if you are wanting details, email me and I'll be more than happy to explain what to do.

Only 25 more projects from this book to go! Miss 13 has her eye on a couple of the patterns too.

While I had the camera out today, thought it was time to update my about page and share a picture of my noggan.

Makeover: Vintage Food Umbrella

A memory that I have from the many Christmas parties & BBQ's hosted by my Nana was the food umbrella that sat in the middle of the table. This cover is now mine but it's seen better days. Today's challenge was to give the umbrella a new cover.

After pulling apart the original cover, I found it to be only two pieces so I pressed the cover and placed it on the new fabric (a soft hailspot tulle) and cut around the shape and made some additional strips for the frill.

I used a rolled edge on my overlocking for the seams and edges to both sides of the frill.

Fold the frill in half and slightly gather.

Using a straight stitch, I added the frill to the cover body.

Hand sewed the stoppers back on and covered the frame.

The only thing I was a little disappointed in was the two sides were not quite long enough so I must not have straightened out the original fabric enough before cutting. But the frill does hide some of the gap.

Tutorial: Kids PVC covered apron + pattern

This tutorial for making a PVC covered apron is easy once you know a few tips and tricks for working with PVC.
I have included this free PDF showing you how to draft this pattern. The instructions are given for a 2 - 4 year old.

You will need :
1 x fabric piece 50cm high by 60cm wide
1 x PVC piece at least 60cm high by 70cm wide - a thinner weight (I used 8g)
2.4 metres of bias (12mm)
A walking foot will help when sewing PVC

Place your pattern on the fold with a straight grain and cut.
With the PVC cover you don't need to cut it to the pattern as yet. It is much easy to do that as we go along so cut a rough piece large enough to cover the entire fabric apron piece with at least a 2cm margin all the way around.
Place your fabric piece face down onto the PVC and pin along the top edge only. Remember only to pin in the seam edge otherwise you will see pin holes. PVC moves around when you are sewing so it's best to get one seam anchored down and then work from there.
Trim the PVC back to the pattern edge on the top apron seam that you are working on only.
Add bias.

Smooth out your fabric & pvc laying flat, right side down.
Pin your bottom curved edge section and trim back the edge to the fabric piece.
Leave the two armhole sections unpinned & uncut.
Add you bias

Trim back your PVC armhole sections back to the fabric piece.
Cut your 2.4 metres of bias in two (1.2 metres each).
Take one half and measure 40cm. Pin this 40cm mark to the bottom LHS on the armhole corner.
Sew the bias in half from the start and continue through to the end.
Measure 44cm and pin this mark to the top RHS corner on the armhole. Again start from the top of bias piece, fold in half and sew through to the end.
Tie off your ends and tidy up threads.

The Craft Market Equation - there's more to it than you think!

Spring in Australia means the Craft Market scene starts to hit it's stride ready to peak for the Christmas season.

Having done many of these seasons myself and knowing many Haby Goddess readers are themselves craft market stallholders, I wanted to discuss a topic that is often discussed amongst stallholders. And that is the measurement of the day's success on a particular equation.

The total amount of sales in $ value - stallholder fee = Success or Failure

Many attend markets with an $ expectation in mind and if they don't achieve that figure then they are disappointed. By having a different approach you may have a very different result.

There is so much more to gain from attending a market than the total sales at the end of that day.

Engage with your customers regardless of whether they are going to buy your product. They may next time. Most visitors to markets are there because they want to be, it's a day out. Use this relaxed & friendly atmosphere to ask questions and find out as much as you can (only if they are happy to engage in conversation of course). Do they come here often? Is today a typical crowd/numbers? Ask them why they like coming to this particular market? What are their favourite stalls? It is not all about getting the sale - think of it a lot like social media. Get off your iPhone! Don't sit to the back of your stall gossiping to the friend you've dragged along - it drives me crazy!
Have a mailing list sheet available to record as many contacts as you can. Mention that you may not be at the next market but you can keep them up to date via an email newsletter. Explain to them the benefits of joining your mailing list. Even though they may not purchase this time round or you never attend that market again, you have begun a relationship with a potential future customer.
Postcards, Flyers, Business cards - be well stocked and offer as many as appropriate. Position in more than one place throughout your stall. Add extras to all bags with your purchases. Every card given is a new contact made.
Talk to other stallholders - network. I have made some wonderful market friendships over the years, even with my competitors. These friendships may lead to many other opportunities down the track like collaborating on joint projects, shared links etc. They may share of another market where they had a great success or the attendees were more your ideal customer base.
Compare the cost to other advertising forms. By doing this market, how many new people will be exposed to your product compared to print or online advertising for the same cost. Can you get advertising for the same price? Remember people are able to touch and see your product first hand. You can explain things about your product that may be difficult to in writing.
Exposing your product to potential retailers. Many retailers trawl craft markets looking for products that will give them an edge over their competitors. If you are set up to wholesale your product have all the info & retailer kits ready to hand out. If you say "I'll get something in the mail to you", they could quite possibly move onto the next stall and find a stallholder who has all the relevant information available. Even if you are not wholesale ready, some retailers may offer consignment style arrangements.

So there is some food for thought when you're attending your next market. Even if the sales for that day are not as high as you expected, the hard work you put in during the day may very well pay off down the track.

Tutorial: yoga bag with insert panel

The one piece of 'me' time I get each week is for a yoga session. But like every other woman who's ever existed, it's squeezed in between work, family and the chaos of life in general.
I arrive to my session in a flurry, often dropping my phone, mat, keys or whatever else I'm carrying. So I decided to make my life a little easier by creating a carry bag specially designed with an insert panel to keep my mat in some kind of rolled manner and a separate section to hold everything else.

Let's start with what you need:

2 x main fabric panels 54cm high x 46 cm wide
2 x lining fabric panels 56cm high x 48 cm wide
2 x main fabric handles 60cm in length x 4.5 cm wide
2 x lining fabric handles 60cm in length x 2cm wide
2 x lining fabric insert 37cm high by 17cm wide

Additional items which are optional : interfacing for insert panels and I used Clover Create-a-Strap for the handles.
All seams are 1cm and you need to finish off all seams according to your fabric and preference.

Cut your handle pieces and fold over an edge like bias (main & lining fabrics)
The thinner lining piece gets sewn along the middle edge of the main fabric handle pieces down both sides.

Start with the outer fabric 1st.
Right sides together and sew down both sides and across the bottom.
Measure and cut 2 inch square from each bottom corner. (measure from the stitched seam)
Pinch and match both seams, pin and sew across.
Pressing is super important here to give the bag a gusset shape. Match seams, fold and press.

Add interfacing to your two lining insert pieces if you are doing so
Place them right sides together and sew along the top and bottom (the shortest widths)
Turn in to the right side and sew a top stitch along the top edge (either one)

Take your lining pieces, measure and mark 30cm across top & bottom (the remainder should be 18cm)

Cut down the entire length

Mark 10cm from the bottom on the both cut pieces (on the side you have just cut)Sandwich your insert between 30cm piece & 18cm piece with the insert bottom sitting at the 10cm mark.

Right sides together.

Pin and sew along the entire lengths

Repeat for the 2nd side. Your sewn together piece should be like a H.

Flattened out your piece, press open your seams, right sides together and sew along sides and bottom. Leave an opening at the bottom to turn through later.

Box out the bottom 2 inches by 2 inches. Same as above for outer fabric.

Insert the main outer fabric bag inside of the lining bag (right sides are together)
Match your side seams and pin
Take your handles and pin in position.
They will be sandwiched in between the lining and main outer fabric. I've sewn my handles on with the lining fabric facing outward.
Sew around the top
Poke bag through your hole left in your lining and sew closed your lining hole.
Your lining fabric was a little longer than the main fabric to leave an edge of about 2cm showing on the outer.
Press and sew around the entire bag edge 2mm above the seam where the main & lining fabric joins.
Press and run a stitch across the handles to help them sit nice and flat. (don't stitch right the way around)

How to add bias to your inside edge

Adding bias to the inside edge of a garment is one of my favourite finishes. It gives a professional look as there are no hems left exposed, it is softer against the skin than a seam plus the bias trim does not show from the front of your garment. It can also act as a casing for elastic. I mainly use this technique for around arm holes and necklines.

Start and sew on your bias as you normally would. Opening out the bias, right sides together and sewing in the first crease. Leave a bias tail at the beginning for joining your bias at the end.
When you come to the end, cut an additional tail of bias and fold the two ends and mark where they should meet. Leave a tiny gap between the two.
Open both pieces of bias up and match the dots and sew together as you normally would when joining bias.
When turned over, if dots match then it should fit nicely . Finish off sewing.

The difference is here. When you turn over your binding, instead of only going half way, take it all over to your wrong side of fabric and press it flat.
Sew your topstitch which should evenly catch the binding underneath.

Where has the last 3 years gone!

I started this blog on the 1st September, 2008 with a post describing the women in my life who have influenced my creative passions.

There have been a lot of posts since (542 in fact), some that are now a little cringe worthy but many that I'm really proud of.

It's been a roller coaster of some lows (a knitting workshop that was cancelled) and many highs including an overwhelming response to my online sewing school.

So if you see a 40ish woman, resembling the image above, running towards you on the street trying to give you a bear hug, please don't call the police it's just me.

I feel I've gotten to know many of you on such a personal level that if I met you on the street I would probably smother you with a hug to say thank you for your support and being a friend.

I haven't finished yet, there's still a lot to come but I'm so glad you're all on this ride with me.

I'll be celebrating all month and will end with my biggest giveaway yet.

Using the right products.

Like any form of craft, taking the time to prepare your applique will give it a professional look finish.

1. Heat N Bond No Sew comes in two different thicknesses. One you can sew if you wish and one you don't. This paper backed product will bond your applique to any fabric surface.

2. Pellon Stitch-N-Tear is used under neath the applique as a stabilizer (sewn in and not iron on). The beauty of this product is it can be torn away when done.

3. Steam-A-Seam is perfect for layering appliques as it is a little tacky meaning it will temporarily hold in a position until you are ready to bond permanently.

4. Even basic iron-on interfacing can do the job as well.

Although most of us already have an idea of how much work goes into creating a sewing pattern, I asked Clare from Clare's Craftroom if she would share just how much work DOES go into creating a paper sewing pattern.

Starting out as a decorative painting teacher, Clare shares how this led to pattern making.
Teaching my own designs was essential as teaching other artists designs just didn't seem the right thing to do. My students were always interested in what I was sewing and so I began making sewing patterns for them. I was lucky enough to have quite a few designs published and had fantastic feedback from them that I just continued designing and loving it!

So Clare, how much work does go into creating sewing patterns?
Lots and lots. I may just start with a very rough sketch and let it simmer or get so excited that I must start straight away. Either way I start with the basic idea and make a roughie in cailco to see how everything sits, and if I like the shape and size. I then draw any adjustments straight onto the calico and re-do my templates and stitch another in calico. I can and have done this up to 10 times, taking notes as I go.
When I'm happier, I use some 'real'fabric to try out some colours. At this stage I use my notes and measurements to start on the pattern writing.
A very basic pattern is written with all the measurements and I follow it exactly to make some shop samples. The pattern is written properly and offered to testers.
My testers are usually bloggers and I always ask for a mix with no softie making experience and some who do. When the pattern comes back from the testers, any adjustments are written into the instructions and the pattern is also ready.
The final design is photographed, the cover is designed and it all goes off to the printer.
From start to finish one design can take a fortnight or as long as six months. I had my Hamper Camper sitting in my house in calico almost a year before it was finished.

You only do paper patterns, have you considered PDF?
My contact with buyers is mainly done online so the only personal interactiion I have with them is when I mail their patterns to them. I love this opportunity to thank them with a bit of a personal touch with a little gifted included such as some ribbon or buttons and a hand written thank you. I return I have received lovely letters and photos of their items made from my patterns, I wouldn't miss that for anything.

What have been the greatest challenges?
Finding a family/work balance has always been difficult for me. I get very engrossed in my work and have burnt tea, left washing in the rain, forgotten to pick up the kids and sometimes have even forgotten that I have kids! Except for getting myself a maid, cook, driver and secretary, I wouldn't want to be doing anything else.

How to add a side pocket to existing garment (bonus pocket template)

I'm definitely a pockets kinda gal and more often than not, I add pockets to my bought garment pieces where there isn't any.

To add a side seam pocket to an existing garment all you need is that - a side seam! I've included a template pattern of a pocket that you can download for your own use.

Here's how to do it:

Obviously unlined garments are easiest, but if your garment does have a lining it isn't really much harder.

Measure how far done you would like your pocket to start and mark with a fabric pen.

Either download the pattern template or create your own. Cut out and place on the top marker and mark where the bottom of the pocket will end.

Undo your side seam with an unpicker past both your markers of where the pocket will sit.

A pocket lining fabric will generally be of a lighter weight than your garment so that it sits and flat. Using a contrasting fabric creates a really nice finish.

Place the right sides of your pocket pieces onto the right side of your garment.

Match up pocket pieces to your markers.

If I were making the garment from scratch I would make this seam a little narrower than the main seam as it sets the pockets fabric back a little. But because the seam is existing and there are stitching holes, I'm using the same seam line.

Sew pocket onto garment making sure the other side is well out of the way so it doesn't get caught.

When you have sewn both pockets onto the garment, place the right sides of pockets together and pin to hold in place.

Matching the line of stitching sew around the edges of your pocket finishing on the other side again matching your stitching line.

Finish off your side seam, matching up to your pocket stitching. Finish off all seams as per your original garment.

And there you have a perfect pocket!

Repeat this entire process on the other side. Make sure the measurements are the same.

Does your iron look like this?

When I received my weekly Snippets newsletter from Colette Patterns (highly recommend it) and it contained some suggestions for cleaning your iron plate I thought it was time to do mine.

How did it get so bad you ask? Well I use a lot of stray starch, iron on interfacings, pellons etc and they all can create this mess.

After taking into account the Snippet suggestions and doing some googling, here's the three most suggested home remedies.

1. Mixing baking soda and water into a paste.

Using a clean cloth and rubbing quite hard, the baking soda did remove the thickest of the gunk.

2. Using vinegar straight onto a cloth

As you can see, this didn't really do very much. May have worked a little better had the scorchings not been as bad! Many recommend adding vinegar to the steam water for a good clean out (but don't iron your clothes until you have emptied out the remainder)

3. Steel Wool

I had called into Spotlight to purchase a commercial iron cleaner (which they don't have) but both ladies I spoke to said to use steel wool. In the end this was by far the easiest & quickest option. I have a teflon plate so it didn't scratch - you would need to check if your plate is suitable for this sort of abrasive material.

After any plate cleaning you will need to unclog the steam holes so set your iron to hot & high steam, place down an old towel, lay iron flat but an inch or two off the towel and press your steam button. Some irons have a calc-clean button which releases a large shot of steam cleaning out any gunk.

Make your own backing cards using scanned fabric images

As I've mentioned, our household is the midst of birthday party season for 9 year olds. So I've been busy making girlie gifts and thought I'd show you a nifty & easy way to present your hair accessories. Perfect for gifts as I have done or if you are starting out selling at markets. Keep in mind all copyright issues if you are scanning fabric to use for business purposes.

You will need

a scanner - mine is a basic all in one
some card stock that will go through your printer
a paper cutter is handy if you have one

Follow the instructions of your printer to copy your fabric. Make sure the fabric is well pressed as all creases will show up.

Using a photo editing site (www.picnik.com is great), crop an even section of the scanned image and then resize to required size.

Add any personal details to the image such as business & website details or the name or occasion of the person receiving the gift.

Once your card is printed and trimmed to the required size, punch holes for the items to be threaded through.

Snap clips won't need holes, you can just clip them to the side (as I've done in the last image)

Bobbypins will need the holes closer to the side edge and hair ties are best in the centre.

Once you have your holes, for hair ties poke the elastic through to the back and then bring it over to the front.

Simple, cheap & very effective.

I'm stipplin' baby!

I picked up my new Darning Foot attachment for my Janome sewing machine yesterday. I asked the nice lady at the sewing centre if there were any tips or tricks she could offer me and she said "Practise, practise, practise". And really that's about all it is.

Here's what I've learnt so far:

Feed dogs need to be dropped.
It feels really weird not having your presser foot against the fabric (it sits above). I kept trying to pull down my lever.
I thought it easier to sew at a faster speed rather than slower.
If your heading for trouble, head to the edge. You can stop, I seem to feel that I must keep going even though my stippling is out of control.
DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH - for some very strange reason I seem to do this. I can remember trying stippling (or free motion sewing) at a Sewing fair once and the instructor said this was a common occurrence!
You do need to have some idea of the pattern you are going to create and the size of the loops etc, this way it will be a little more uniform but on the other hand you don't want to over think it.
Try not to cross over your stitching line, unless of course that is the effect you are trying to achieve.

This square, where I've cleverly disguised all the really bad bits with the angle of shot, will definitely not make it into the quilt I'm making but I do see a glimmer of hope for pieces in the near future. I had a lot of fun trying.
